Chris Maxwell has worked within the field of crisis intervention and suicide prevention since 2009. He volunteered at his local crisis center, Headquarters Counseling Center (HQCC), in Lawrence, KS for nearly 5 years, answering local and national calls to the hotline. He helped administer a state-wide Garrett Lee Smith suicide prevention grant for Kansas, operated at HQCC from 2013-2015, providing trainings, building relationships with state entities to initiate crisis systems change, and hosting multiple statewide and regional conferences. In 2015, he developed and established Kansas’ first crisis chat/online emotional support program, operated by HQCC. For nearly 2 years, Chris worked as the Member Engagement Coordinator for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, strengthening the connections between the centers who form the network and distributed critical information and opportunities.
Chris earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas in 2009. He is currently certified as a trainer in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) and Counseling on Access to Lethal Means (CALM). Chris is an Advisory Board Member for OurDataHelps.org, a project that allows you to donate your social media data to help develop tools for clinicians aimed at better predicting suicide risk. He is also a production team member and co-host for Suicide Prevention Social Media (#SPSM), a weekly YouTube show founded by April Foreman, PhD and Tony Wood, and cohosted by Bart Andrews, PhD (former NASCOD Board President). #SPSM is an expert to expert program highlighting the intersection of suicide prevention, social media, and technology.
Chris most recently joined the American Association of Suicidology (AAS) as Communications Coordinator in early 2018. In this role, he is responsible for coalescing current strategic media and communications operations, as well as assisting AAS in establishing forward-thinking partnerships and collaborations. One of Chris’s major goals in this position is to leverage the current efforts of AAS and expand them using innovative approaches and technologies.
